Winning Designs Announced for Kingston Road Playground and Skate Park
The pirate-themed playground by Kompan and skate park from CANVAS are the two new play features to be built in Kingston Road Recreation Ground in Leatherhead this summer. Kompan, the play company behind the hugely popular Meadowbank Playground, will begin work in the first week in July 2018.
The winning playground design delighted Mole Valley District Council (MVDC), local residents and users of the existing facilities with its imaginative range of fun and inclusive features, including: a pirates Crow's Nest with slide, inclusive carousel, trampoline, zip wire, young explorers lookout tower, octopus see-saw and even hidden treasure.
Work will begin on-site the first week in July and the existing playground will be temporarily closed until the refurbishment is complete later this summer. The swing set to the edge of the play area will remain open throughout, however, and families have the option of enjoying themselves at one of Mole Valley's other excellent playgrounds such as Forty Foot Road Rec in Leatherhead or Ashtead Recreation Ground.
The winning skate park design impressed existing users, MVDC and local residents with an exciting mix of traditional skate park features including a bowl section, grind rails, spine ramp and flat bank, and alternative play options like table tennis and table football. Work to create this modern and dynamic facility will begin later this summer.
Councillor David Hawksworth CBE, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: "We were delighted with the response from the local community in engaging with us to choose these creative, inclusive and exciting play facility features. The new playground will provide children the chance to play, learn and imagine, and the refurbished skate park will both challenge and delight users. We aim to continue to invest in recreation facilities of all types to provide for residents of all ages and abilities."
