Special Contributions to Mole Valley Sport Recognised
The contributions of special people who have excelled in some aspect of sporting activity in Mole Valley were recognised as part of Active Surrey's prestigious annual Sports Awards. Numerous well-deserving nominees - each with their own achievements and personal stories to tell - had their names put forward by local residents. The Surrey Sports Awards provide a unique opportunity each year to recognise local sporting talent and honour the passion in the district for sport. Mole Valley residents inspired by a local athlete, motivated by a coach or impressed by a volunteer, voted for their favoured athlete, a club, team, volunteer or coach. Each person who entered a nomination was in the chance of winning £100-worth of sports equipment. Emma Goodwin was announced as the lucky winner of the prize draw.
The winners of the nine categories were as follows:
• Outstanding Service to Sport: Mike Knott
• Sports Club of the Year: Girls Alive
• Young Volunteer of the Year: Naomi Brown
• Young Sports Team of the Year: St Paul's Lacrosse Team
• Sports Team of the Year: Blue Swans Walking Netballers
• Sports Personality of the Year: Saul Brignell
• Volunteer of the Year: Philippa Curphey
• Young Sports Personality of the Year: Cameron Stirling
Councillor David Hawksworth CBE, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: "Congratulations to each and every person nominated for an award in recognition of their unique sporting achievements in the past year. I understand the voting process to determine a winner in each category was incredibly close, and is a testament to people's own remarkable and oft-unsung contributions to a sport activity in the district.
"I would like to make mention of the Sports Personality of the Year winner and Mole Valley District Council employee, Saul Brignell. Saul has been running with a club less than two years and took an unpaid sabbatical from his job as Transport Manager at Mole Valley Community Transport to run ten marathons in ten days to raise money for two very worthy local charitable causes."
