Swan Shopping Centre refurbishment - phase 1 complete

The first phase of refurbishment to the Swan Shopping Centre, part of Transform Leatherhead, has completed on time.

Stylish and refreshed, the completely renewed public toilets and new baby changing facilities at the Swan Centre have now opened. At the same time, the first phase of the Swan Centre car park works to levels 1-2 have also completed with levels 3-4 scheduled to finish later this week - making the car park a better and easier place to park in Leatherhead. This included improvements around the ramps such as painting and chamfering (reducing and angling the edges) of the kerbs, painting the walls and applying rubber protection.

Councillor Simon Edge, Cabinet Member for Prosperity, said: "We are delighted this first phase has been completed on time, and thank everyone for bearing with us during the work. Mole Valley District Council is undertaking the refurbishments as part of our Transform Leatherhead initiatives aimed at rejuvenating, expanding and transforming Leatherhead town centre.

"It is great to see the new public facilities completed to coincide with the Leatherhead Halloween event. We are grateful to Sainsbury's, Boots, Costa's and Mangobean café for supporting us during the refurbishment works and offering their facilities to the public.

"Along-side these works we are working closely with retail experts, to develop anevidence based, long term, development recommendation for the Swan Centre, to ensure it's contribution to the town is maintained and that it will continue to act as a catalyst to revitalise the High Street. This will be reported to the Council's Cabinet in February 2019.

"As stakeholders on Leatherhead High Street, Mole Valley District Council has the opportunity to positively influence the retail offer in the town and ensure that we respond to the rapidly changing needs of retailers"

The second phase of the refurbishment will take place in early 2019 after a break over the Christmas period to avoid disrupting Christmas trade. These will include the completion of the car park improvements to include levels 5-6 and replacement of the lifts. The final phase will take place next summer and will include the reconfiguration of the stairwell and the creation of a brand new retail space within the centre.
