Double bid for High Street Heritage Action Zones Scheme
Mole Valley District Council is putting forward Dorking and Leatherhead's historic High Streets for the opportunity to receive funding through Historic England's High Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme . This scheme is a new £44 million fund which will allow Historic England to work with partners to find new ways to champion and revive our historic High Streets.
Councillor Clayton Wellman, Cabinet Member for Economy said, "This is a great opportunity for Mole Valley to support two of its heritage rich town centres.
"Leatherhead, Dorking and other High Streets across the district are similarly affected by the dramatic changes in the retail market impacting High Streets across the country. This new scheme is targeted at historic High Streets, specifically those with designated conservation areas like Dorking and Leatherhead.
"If successful the funding could be spent on the regeneration of historic buildings and the associated public realm. This would aim to act as a catalyst for improving wider social, cultural, environmental and economic outcomes. It could also go towards a cultural programme to be developed with our communities and local cultural organisations and designed to encourage local people to engage with the heritage on their High Street.
"Part of the application process requires us to show we have support from the local community. Visit www.molevalley.gov.uk/HeritageActionZone to get involved.
"We will continue to ensure that Mole Valley District Council participates in opportunities to support our town and village centres."
